Angélica Fuentes, Founder of the Angélica Fuentes Foundation, commented, “Latin America and the region have been the priority and the focus of our Foundation. We hoped that by partnering with the UN Fund for Gender Equality, we could facilitate and strengthen the support and investment of the Fund in the region. We are both very proud and thankful that the total invested Funds in LATAM since our involvement resulted in an approximate aggregate investment of $2MM in 6 different countries, 3 times the order of magnitude of our Foundation’s contribution. Beyond these figures, and provided the expertise and rigorous work of the Fund for Gender Equality. We are completely confident that the gender equality and women empowerment results derived from this investment in selected programs and countries will be at par or, very likely, above our expectations.”

About Angélica Fuentes Foundation
Angélica Fuentes Foundation believes that women empowerment and gender equality are some of the most efficient tools for social, economic and environmental development. They envision a world in which women and men cooperate and work together in a context of equanimity and equality of opportunities, where women are able to fully participate in all the areas of human endeavor, for their personal wellbeing as well as that of the communities they live in.

Angélica Fuentes Foundation’s goal is to promote and encourage gender equality and women empowerment in Latin America as one of the most efficient tools for economic, social and environmental development in the region. To achieve this goal, they work with a model that seeks to accurately measure the impact they can have in communities and countries where they have a direct or indirect presence, through their programs, their network of organizations or those for which they provide financial support and consulting.

The measurement carried out by the Foundation seeks to define comparative criteria to evaluate the economic participation of men and women, access to education and professional development, as well as pay equity by gender. Likewise, these measurements also allow monitoring the direct impact these rights have on other externalities such as teenage pregnancy, gender violence and access to justice, as well as the well-being and progress of the community in general.

Gender Equality Update – Angelica Fuentes and U.N. Girl Up Push Legislation in Guatemala to Change Legal Age of Marriage From 14 to 18 Years Old

Implementation of Legislation for the Girl Up in Guatemala Initiative Moving Legal Age of Marriage to Protect Approx. 3.5 Million Children Over the Next 4 Years

EL PASO, TX–(Oct 3, 2016) – Angélica Fuentes Foundation (FAF), a private institution committed to the overall empowerment of women of all ages through the strengthening and financing of organizations that support women’s advancement, proudly announces the social and youth initiative that caused Guatemala Legislation to raise the legal marriage age from 14 to 18 years passed in January 2016 is one of the greatest milestones in Latin American youth rights in decades. The joint effort between the United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up and Angélica Fuentes Foundation (FAF) will have an immediate impact by protecting 3.5 million children (approx. 22% of current country population).

The financial structuring and funding of the Girl Up campaign in Guatemala have been led by Angelica Fuentes Foundation, which invested $1.5 Million representing 60% of the total project investment aimed at strengthening women’s empowerment and gender equality in this country. The changes to Guatemala’s law created a wide field of opportunity to generate favorable living conditions to Guatemalan women, largely indigenous, by inhibiting the practice of forcing girls to marry at an early age, a situation that forces them to not complete their education and constrains opportunities to reach their full potential. The Girl Up campaign also had the support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), as coordinating body and NGO Let Girls Lead.

Angelica Fuentes, Founder of the Angelica Fuentes Foundation, commented, “This is a huge win for the gender equality movement and this legal reform represents a major advancement in the efforts of protecting our youth by given them a chance to grow up and develop on their own. I am very motivated by this progress and now we are looking at other surrounding countries to follow suit. It should be our most important mission to protect our youth — this legislation alone will have a trickle-down effect protecting and preserving over approx. 40% of the country’s population which are currently under the age of 18 years old.”

“The support of the Angelica Fuentes Foundation has been instrumental in pursuing the objectives of Girl Up and its partners. This historic change in Guatemala sends a message to everyone regarding the importance to guarantee the right for education of all girls and women, to have the freedom to decide for themselves and to have opportunities for a better future,” said Melissa Hillebrenner Kilby, Director of Girl Up at the United Nations Foundation Initiative.

The SDGs build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and aim to go further to end all forms of poverty. The new Goals are unique in that they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and addresses a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.

While the SDGs are not legally binding, governments are expected to take ownership and establish national frameworks for the achievement of the 17 Goals. Countries have the primary responsibility for follow-up and review of the progress made in implementing the Goals, which will require quality, accessible and timely data collection. Regional follow-up and review will be based on national-level analyses and contribute to follow-up and review at the global level.

HealRWorld, Sustainable Brands, Geometry Global & PVBLIC Foundation Unite to Rally Global Businesses and Consumers in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals Adopted at the United Nations Last September

Celebrities, Entrepreneurs and Philanthropists Agree to be the Faces of the SDGs for the SustainRWorld Day Campaign

NEW YORK, NY (September 8, 2016) – SustainRWorld Day, which launches September 8th at the United Nations, is an initiative intended to rally the private sector to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by inspiring a movement to make every day SustainRWorld Day and celebrate our measurable progress each year.

One year after global governments aligned on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to drive worldwide social and environmental impact, some impact has been made, but much more remains to be accomplished. HealRWorld, together with its partners Sustainable Brands®, Geometry Global and PVBLIC Foundation, have come together with a shared belief that to truly drive results we must harness the power of businesses as influencers in addition to governments.

This partnership is the genesis of a long-term strategy intended to “make every day SustainRWorld Day” including a campaign and longer-term platform releases intended to shift the current “take, make and waste” consumption paradigms.

The vision launches with a campaign entitled “The 17”, where individual business leaders, influencers, academics and celebrities become the public faces of each of the SDGs proclaiming “I am” and their respective goal.

The campaign not only personalizes the global goals, but puts a stake in the ground for businesses to rally for change. These major influencers will hopefully spur others to do the same, as well as inspire consumers to speak with their most important vote–their dollars. The list of influencers who’ve pledged their commitment to the campaign includes notable names such as:

  • Ted Danson (actor and activist for the Oceans)
  • Jostein Solheim (CEO of Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc.)
  • Eileen Fisher (President/Founder, Eileen Fisher)
  • Naveen Jain (Founder of Moon Express, BlueDot, Intelius & Infospace)
  • Jigar Shah (clean energy entrepreneur and author)
  • Sonita Alizadeh (Afghan teen rapper)

“We intend to motivate every business leader, employee, student and consumer to pledge their support to one of the SDGs by visiting www.sustainrworldday.global and taking the pledge. Once pledged, they can tout their commitment via social media via #iam and #oneforall and inspire others to get involved,” says Michele Bongiovanni, CEO and Founder of HealRWorld.

“The campaign will roll out with additional media and social support through PVBLIC Foundation and the ‘One for All’ initiative as each new “17” is announced over the coming year,” says Heidi Schoeneck, the creative lead behind the campaign. The team intends to hold an anniversary event annually globally on this date to measure and celebrate the progress made.

Numerous studies point to the fact that companies that adopt sustainable practices not only positively impact society and the environment, but also outperform their peers on several measures. In fact, a recent study by HealRWorld and the Dun & Bradstreet Corporation found, 63% of global sustainable businesses in HealRWorld’s database had a “low risk” for business discontinuance/failure validating the use of the sustainability factor in predictive models or as a risk segmentation tool.

“Given our research proves that “doing good can mean doing well” for even small and mid-sized businesses, we believe creating a movement to align businesses around the SDGs in both the public and private sectors can greatly contribute to their significant progress over the next 30 years. This was the genesis for SustainRWorld Day and our reaching out to Sustainable Brands, Geometry Global and PVBLIC Foundation to partner given they share this vision,” said Michele Bongiovanni, CEO of HealRWorld.

“Brands are uniquely positioned to align business and society on the path to a flourishing future in both focusing on corporate energy and influencing culture,” states Geoff Trotter, Chief Development Officer at Sustainable Brands. “Their commitment to action is what will take the concept of sustainability out of the field of discourse and into practice inside companies. SustainRWorld Day will be our annual celebration of measured success against the UN SDGs and along our path toward a sustainable future.”
